In March I was honored to be awarded the 2016 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. https://gradschool.duke.edu/about/news/heather-heenehan-2016-dean-s-award-winner
In the award announcement, Jacqueline Looney, Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at the Duke Graduate School, said that the award was given to the “two graduate students who best exemplify the characteristics of effective college teaching… who have engaged in professional development activities and have made significant contributions to teaching, TA training, and student learning outcomes within their department or across disciplinary boundaries at Duke.” I was honored to share this award with Steffen Kaup, who recently defended his Ph.D. in German Studies.
For more information please see my profile for the award, the blog I wrote about the award, and the other pages including student feedback and my teaching statement. As part of the award the two videos (below) were filmed to highlight my approach to teaching.
Many thanks to the Duke Graduate School for this award and to the Marine Science and Conservation Department for nominating me and giving me such a wonderful place to grow and learn.
